The focus of our Functional Medicine practice is on identifying the most critical physiologic mechanisms that manifest in the patient’s signs and symptoms and focusing on these underlying mechanisms with natural substances, rather than focusing on suppressing the symptoms, as most pharmaceutical agents tend to do. This is accomplished through extensive laboratory testing, (blood, urine, stool and saliva) and various health assessment questionnaires. The ultimate objective is to strive for self-regulation so that health can be achieved and maintained by the patient without having to rely on medicine indefinitely. Nutritional supplements or botanical/herbal medicine is often needed in order to achieve the desired results in the initial stages.
In the preventative model, we look carefully for signs of abnormal physiologic mechanisms and address them with nutritional medicine before the patient progresses to late-stage or chronic disease. However, we can often help people with many types of chronic conditions regain their health by addressing these underlying patterns that result in chronic disease states, such as:
- diabetes or pre-diabetes
- obesity/weight gain
- chronic fatigue or low energy
- hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism
- acid reflux/GERD/gastritis
- inflammatory bowel disease (Crohns’, ulcerative colitis)
- digestive problems
- rheumatoid arthritis
- women’s health issues
- memory loss
- dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease
We help children as well as adults in our full-spectrum natural and preventative healthcare practice. Our aim is to achieve optimal health for all members of the family. We take a client-centered approach to your healthcare that is tailored to the unique needs of our patients. We welcome working with you and your other doctors collaboratively in achieving optimal health.

FirstLine Therapy® Now Offered at San Jose Functional Medicine!
FirstLine Therapy® is a comprehensive therapeutic lifestyle change (TLC) program that takes a multidisciplinary approach to weight gain and metabolic abnormalities and leads to an improvement in important cardiovascular risk factors such as:
- elevated blood sugar
- elevated triglycerides
- elevated cholesterol
- high blood pressure
TLC is recommended by the following leading health organizations as an initial health intervention before resorting to the use of pharmaceutical intervention:
This unique 12-week program involves an initial assessment by a certified FirstLine Therapy® nutritionist using a novel technology known as BIA (Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis) to assess the percentage of fat and non-fat body tissue as well as intracellular and extracellular fluid compartments of the body. Most weight loss programs do not assess for this and as a result, weight loss itself does not necessarily mean fat loss, which should always be the target of any weight loss program. Our nutritionist monitors these percentages throughout the entire 12-week program.
The program involves clear, easy-to-follow Mediterranean-style-based dietary recommendations, exercise, relaxation techniques and specific research-based nutritional supplements that improve metabolic function and intracellular processes. This results in a reduction of important cardiovascular markers after the twelve weeks (blood sugar, triglycerides, cholesterol and blood pressure) and weight loss occurs naturally, as a result. This program has been proven to work in three different studies published in nutritional journals. In one study involving two groups of patients, one group was put on a Mediterranean-style diet alone and another group on the Mediterranean-style diet plus the specialized nutritional supplements used in the FirstLine Therapy® program.
